Amazing Race 3 – Leg 7: Marrakech to Fussen

20 Nov

The racers head back to Europe for Germany and Austria. Lost clues and flat tires hit the racers. Whoever is providing vehicles for this race needs some serious quality control improvements! The teams try to get flights from Morocco to Munich. Once there, they hop the train to Innsbruck. Then it’s down the bobsled track, and up the mountain before racing to the finish line back in Germany. Andre & Damon just can’t get a break at the airport, and find themselves rolling into the pitstop and out of the race.

This leg provided lots of airport intrigue since all the flights from Morocco to Europe were overbooked. Was Flo’s attempt to sabotage Andre & Damon successful? I doubt it. I suspect the ticket agent was just playing along with her. Even though it didn’t really affect Andre & Damon, it was the airport that did them in.

Flo & Zach spent a good bit of time fretting over whether to go for the fast forward. From our “omniscient” point of view, we know that this was not the time to use it. However, they had no way of knowing that Andre & Damon had been delayed at the airport. So, they used their fast forward to no real advantage.

This now leaves John Vito & Jill as the only remaining team that still has their Fast Forward. As long as they can stay out of last place, they can pretty much write their ticket into the final three. All they have to do is wait until the 11th leg and grab the Fast Forward and secure themselves a place and quite possibly a good lead.

Ken & Gerard continue their alliance with Derek & Drew. But the strain is starting to show. Derek & Drew’s discussion at the train station about waiting for them highlights this. As Derek & Drew say toward the end of the episode, the race has reached the point where there are too few teams to have a successful alliance. At the beginning of the race, an alliance can help the member teams stay in the middle of the pack. But now, the middle of the pack is getting too small to accommodate the alliance. The big question is whether Derek & Drew are going to tell Ken & Gerard about it. Dumping them without telling them would generate a lot of unnecessary ill will. And I believe Ken & Gerard will understand.

John Vito & Jill continue to hold there own in the middle of the pack. No real mistakes this leg.

Teri & Ian seemed a lot more civil to each other this episode. But that was probably mostly due to the fact that they started in first place. Now that their back in 4th place, I imagine they’ll be back at each other’s throats next week.

I think Andre & Damon were still suffering the after effects of their detainment from last week. They didn’t seem to be running on all cylinders this week. And this leg highlights what seems to be their fatal flaw: airport skills. They just didn’t seem to know what to do when there were no flights available. Ah well, they ran a pretty good race. It’s been fun watching you guys.

One final thought…. I’m beginning to wonder if Production has been purposely sabotaging the spoon fed transportation. From the run down VW busses in Leg 1, to John Vito & Jill’s dead radiator last week, to Ken & Gerard’s blown tire this week. I don’t think they had this many car problems in The Amazaing Race 2.
