Amazing Race 3 – Leg 10: Montreux to Singapore

04 Dec

The racers finally leave Europe and head for Southeast Asia. First to Malaysia to visit the world’s tallest skyscrapers. Then to Singapore to visit the Fountain of Wealth. But there is no wealth in John Vito & Jill’s future as their last place arrival at the pitstop results in their elimination. The race finally makes it out of Europe as the teams are told to fly to Kuala Lampur to visit the Petronas Towers. From there, its on to Singapore and a choice between Wet and Dry. We learn way too much about Teri & Ian’s clothing selection, and John Vito & Jill are done in by an inability to navigate. We’ll miss you. <sniff>

Finally, the race moves on. And TPTB see fit to make the racers work to figure out where their going. The “fly to the country represented by this flag” clue was great. Flo & Zach were able to figure out the destination based on the rest of the clue, but the other 4 teams all had to ask for help identifying the flag. It’s amazing how many people in Switzerland are able to identify the Malaysian flag on sight. Or maybe there the only ones who made it on television. Certainly makes the Swiss seem very well educated though and it’s great PR for the Tourist Board.

So, the teams are off to the airport to get themselves to Kuala Lumpur. Teri & Ian manage to get themselves on an early flight, and make it to Malaysia ahead of the rest of the teams. Of course, the rest of the teams are so cocky, they think Teri & Ian have fallen behind them when they don’t see them on the plane. Careful folks, that attitude will get you eliminated.

Once in Malaysia, the teams are instructed to play celebrity endorsers for Kodak. Between the racers reading the clue, and Phil explaining things to us, they must mention Kodak’s name at least a dozen times. Enough with the product placement guys.

Anyways, Teri & Ian manage to stay ahead of everyone by a few minutes until they hit the train station. The next train out is the 11:15am one to Singapore, and everyone has time to catch it. Ah well, all leads in this race are transient, until you cross the finish line.

Once in Singapore, the Detour sends the teams scurrying off. Derek & Drew and Teri & Ian choose Wet and head to the Zoo. While Ken & Gerard, Flo & Zach, and John Vito & Jill choose Dry and try to find their way to a confusing apartment building in a confusing section of town. Ken & Gerard and Flo & Zach find the apartment and get the clue, but John Vito & Jill are left driving aimlessly around Singapore trying to find the apartment. (Note to any future racers: Learn to navigate and read maps.) Teri & Ian and Derek & Drew both swim across the tank and grab their clues.

The clue sends the teams to the Fountain of Wealth. Ken & Gerard offer to lead Flo & Zach to the fountain if they’ll give them their map. When Flo finds out that Zach has refused to give up his map, she goes ballistic on him. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a woman screech at that high a frequency. I’m surprised she didn’t shatter all the glass in the neighboring apartment buildings. More surprisingly is that no one called the cops on her.

And honestly, I can’t blame Zach for not giving up the map. His navigation skills aren’t that bad, and at this point in the race, who can you really trust? Everyone is out to win. And even Gerard was trying to get Ken to lose them. So really, Flo had no right to go off on Zach the way she did. And Flo, maybe if you actually contributed more to the race instead of trying to pick up Drew, Zach might be willing to discuss the decisions with you.

At the Fountain of Wealth, the clue instructs them to head for the Pit Stop. According to sources close to the race, the fountain was actually the Roadblock for the race. One of the racers had to run around the fountain 3 times for good luck before running into the middle and grabbing the clue. But time constraints leave us with just the dash into the middle to get the clue.

Anyways, the teams race up to the pitstop, with Derek & Drew arriving first, and John Vito & Jill arriving last and being eliminated. Using that Fast Forward on the last leg really hurt them. They could really have used it here to avoid all the navigation difficulties. I’m sorry to see them go.

Next week, the racers head to Vietnam and face the “storm of the century”. Hope they all have a dry change of clothes.
