Amazing Race 3 – Leg 11: Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City

11 Dec

Vietnam awaits the racers with crowded streets, boat rides, and street vending. Teri & Ian take the lead as Zach contemplates giving up in an attempt to escape Flo’s whining. Ken & Gerard and Derek & Drew run up and down the waterfront hunting for the last clue only to have a hint from Flo save Ken & Gerard. The racers head to the crowded streets of Veitnam. A little buying and selling followed by a bike ride should bring the teams to the pitstop, but both teams of brothers have trouble finding the final clue. An unlikely tip saves Ken & Gerard and leaves Derek & Drew to land on the mat in last place.

The teams leave Singapore and head to Vietnam. While Ken & Gerard get a jump on the rest of the times by getting a flight out to Kuala Lumpur that evening, they lose it when they can’t get into Ho Chi Min until the next morning and the rest of the teams catch up with them. Such is the luck of airports.

It was interesting listening to Ian’s commentary on being back in Vietnam for the first time since the war. He seemed to come to terms with the reality of the situation and learn to understand the people better. While he still seemed to fall into old habits in his relations with the Vietnamese people, I’m sure it was just habit and not anything racist.

The Flo moment of this leg starts with her reaction to the Customs incident. I believe Zach was right in his decision not to cut in line when her line moved faster. Things like that usually end up with people detained by the police, and that would have set them a lot further back than the 15 minutes waiting in line did. So, shut up, Flo. You two shouldn’t have split up anyways.

The Detour provided some fun moments. And a few un-fun moments. Watching Ian yell out to the Vietnamese sellers was amusing. Especially since they were laughing at him for his horrible pronuncation. According to what I’ve read, Ian was yelling about wanting “water water” while standing in a boat in the pouring rain. Got work on pronunciation there Ian.

Ken & Gerard are in usual form deciding that they should try out both detour choices. But they do seem to have much better luck with the selling instead of the buying. Especially when they decide to undercut the market and sell all the fruit there carrying for 10,000. I’m sure prices in the Mekong Delta will be reeling from them flooding the market for years to come.

Flo continues her moment (which by this time has become its own mini-series) at the Detour. She feels the need to whine at Zach about having to help with the Detour, about not selling enough, and then about walking off without her. Get over yourself and help out with the race, girl. And do us all a favor and leave Zach alone. He’s a saint for putting up with you. You’ll be lucky if he ever wants to go anywhere with you again.

Finally, we come to the nail-biting portion of the episode: the Roadblock. Who will find the clue box first? Derek & Drew or Ken & Gerard? According to interviews with Derek & Drew, they spent 2 hours trying to find the clue box. I’m surprised neither of them thought to follow the little yellow flags back down the road to look for the clue box. But they had probably given in to the “herd mentality”. Keep the other team in sight in case it comes to a race to the mat. To bad for Flo that she opened her mouth to the wrong team and got her “boyfriend” Drew eliminated.

Good bye Derek & Drew. It was fun while it lasted. And you took the elimination gracefully. Good luck to you in all your future endeavors.
