The teams arrive at China Beach for one last pitstop. The racers leave Ho Chi Min City and head north. Flo has a melt down and threatens to quit (don’t we wish). China Beach marks the Pit stop of this leg before the final sprint to the finish.

Commentary

On this episode of “Flo’s Mental & Emotional Breakdown” we join the teams as they travel through Vietnam. The teams leave the pit stop and head for the train station to get tickets to Hue. Since the ticket windows doesn’t open until 7am, Teri & Ian lose their 40 minute lead on Flo & Zach. Shortly thereafter, Ken & Gerard show up evening everything up.

While waiting for tickets, Flo spends her time constructively by yelling at Zach, complaining about how long the train ride is going to be, and moaning about how horrible and unfair her life is. Zach finally convinces her to try to get a little sleep. But about that time, the music starts and she forces Zach to walk with her to another terminal. This decision, while understandable to a certain extent, costs them the chance of actually getting a sleeper car on the train like the other teams. Flo’s whining comes back to bite her again. Once on the train, Ken, Gerard, Teri, & Ian all manage to get some sleep while Flo & Zach are forced to curl themselves up in their seats. Flo doesn’t look in the least bit comfortable.

Once they arrive in Hue, the teams race to the old palace grounds to find the next clue. Naturally, Flo feels the need to whine and complain about Zach’s directions and decisions the entire time. Shut up, Flo!

Ken & Gerard manage to find the clue box first and get out of the palace ahead of everyone. Ian is the next to find it, but his yelling for Teri alerts Flo & Zach to the location of the box. Gotta work on that, Ian.

At the Namo Bridge Detour, the last big mental and physical challenge of the race is waiting: Bikes or Boats. Ken & Gerard immediately decide to do Bikes, as do Teri & Ian. But the laden bikes are almost too much for the racers to manage. Only Ken is able to ride down the trail on his own. Although, to be fair, Gerard does have the peddle on his bike break which would make it difficult to ride. Eventually, Gerard, Teri & Ian all hire local kids to help them down the trail.

Meanwhile, Flo & Zach have arrived and decided to do the boats. Flo spends as more energy complaining about how hard the boats are than she does actually trying to row. Maybe if she closed her mouth, she could do better. After listening to her whine, Zach finally gives in and agrees to go check out the bike half of the detour. But Flo whines about this choice as well and wants to quit right then and there.

After much cajoling by Zach, she finally agrees to go back to the boats. But only after he says they’ll hire some people to take them across the river to the clue. This episode is not kind to Flo at all, but I honestly believe that she got what she deserved. She had a mental and emotional breakdown on this leg. And that’s just the kind of thing that makes for good television.

Anyways, the teams make it to the pit stop at China Beach. Order isn’t really important since everyone is going to be bunched during the next episode anyways. Next stop: the finish line.
