Amazing Race 3 – Leg 9: Grindelwald to Montreux

04 Dec

The teams continue their tour of Switzerland and are given the choice of taking a flying leap, or playing goat herder. After assembling their bikes, the teams ride off to the pitstop where Flo & Zach find out they aren’t eliminated. The teams continue their race through Switzerland. John Vito & Jill take the fast forward in an attempt to avoid elimination. Derek & Drew take the plunge while the rest of the teams chase a few goats. A phone call home to loved ones doesn’t seem to slow the racers much. After a train ride and a bike ride, the teams make it to pitstop and find out this is a non-elimination leg, saving Flo & Zach.

This Leg was mildly disappointing as the race hangs out in Europe yet again. While we’ve seen 3 legs in a row in Europe, they’ve only been in Europe for 4 days. And it’s not unusual for the race to dwell in a region of the world. The last race spent 3 legs in Southeast Asia with two of those being in Thailand. At least his time around, we’ve gotten to see 3 different countries, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Granted, we did spend two legs racing through Scotland and Portugal, but that was a different region of Europe with different challenges, so I’ll forgive them for it.

Anyways, the controversy of the leg is John Vito & Jill and their taking of the Fast Forward. In hindsight, it’s obvious this wasn’t the “most advantageous” time to go for it. But, from all past experiences with the race, there have never been back to back non-elimination legs. So, at the time, this was the perfect time to take the Fast Forward and guarantee yourself a free pass to Leg 11. But the producers threw a curve ball, and John Vito & Jill found their Fast Forward wasted. Too bad too. They could definitely have used it during the next leg.

The Detour was unusual this week since the obvious faster choice, bungee jumping, wasn’t really faster. Finding the keys at the goats didn’t seem to take too long, and Ken & Gerard actually beat Derek & Drew to the next clue. Wonder what Derek & Drew thought of that turn of events?

Speaking of next clues, the Roadblock was actually quite a challenge this week. Definitely something to test the mechanical skills of the racers. And some are better at it than others. I imagine that Gerard and Ian have an advantage over Drew and Zach since they both have kids and have probably spent several Christmas Eve’s assembling toys and bikes. But then, Zach and Drew had to put with badgering from their teammates while trying to get the job done, so that probably slowed them down.

Speaking of Badgering, she’s partnered with Zach. At least, that ought to be her name. She spent a good portion of this leg whining at Zach and pouting and refusing to race. From the Roadblock to the Mat, all she did was complain how they were behind and threaten to quit. That Zach hasn’t throttled her yet is a sign of his patience. And he was right. They could have caught Teri & Ian. There is a shot showing Teri & Ian paddling away as Zach runs up to the paddle boats in the background. Flo & Zach are younger and stronger, so there was a very real possibility that they could have caught Teri & Ian paddling out to the boat. It isn’t until they hit the mat and find out they aren’t eliminated that Flo finally shuts up.

So, everyone survives this leg, and they’re all within a couple hours of each other. With the previews showing more plane flights in the immediate future, they’ll all be bunched at the beginning of the next leg, so it’s still anybody’s race.
