Elimination Report: Kevin & Drew

06 Mar

This is the first installment in what I intend to become a regular feature discussing the most recently eliminated team. This post is actually a few days late, but we can all just pretend.

Episode 2 ended with Kevin & Drew being eliminated from the race. The trip from Ecuador to Chile was brutal for them. Fighting altitude sickness and a sore shoulder, Drew was clearly not in any kind of shape to deal with the punishing leg with all the driving.

Killer Fatigue seemed to hit Drew very early in this race. Probably a combination of all the driving, the altitude sickness, and the injured shoulder. But with Killer Fatigue comes bad judgment and inattention to detail. No where is that more evidenced than in their complete oversight of the change in speed limit coming out of the Valley of the Moon. The first rule of driving is to pay attention to the road and the road signs. Kevin and Drew were so concerned about the teams behind them, that they stopped watching the road signs and completely missed the speed limit. That oversight, probably more than anything else they did, pushed them out of the race. Even with Drew’s sickness, had they kept up the speed limit, they might have had a chance to stay in the race.Watching the drama that unfolded at the mat, I wonder how much Drew really wanted to be back on the race. It seemed evident that Kevin was really into this second go around, but Drew always just seemed to be along for the ride. Without the determination of both racers, it is very difficult for a team to stay ahead. (Unless your Zach and are able to drag flow along with you, kicking and screaming.)
