Episode 11.6 - The Flight from Hell

26 Mar

Talk about unexpected roadblocks. I think this episode probably taxed the producers nearly as much as it taxed the racers. Their carefully laid out leg that was probably designed to have teams stretched out over a 4-6 hour stretch got hosed by the airline availability and now they have teams spread out over nearly 24 hours. It is going to be a huge challenge for the producers to adjust the race to allow the trailing teams an opportunity to catch up. We’ve seen 6 and 7 hour leads vanish with a late night trip to the airport, but it will take 2 or 3 of those to bring the trailing teams close enough for it to matter.

This isn’t the first time teams have gotten caught in a mess at the airports. It happened back in TAR 3 when Dennis & Andrew got the short end of the stick trying to get out of Cancun to Aberdeen, Scotland. They ended up a day behind the rest of the teams, and even their joyride in an armored personnel carrier couldn’t save them from elimination.Guido has been here before, languishing as they did so far behind Rob & Brennan and Frank & Margarita. This has got to be a very disheartening turn of events for them. It will be interesting to see how far behind Eric & Danielle they are and whether they will be able to close the gap during the next leg.

Charla & Mirna seem to have inherited the Luck of the Evil this time around, scoring the first flight out of Maputo and into Dar Es Salaam. A lucky chase last leg has now propelled them to two 1st place finishes in a row. And with the gap that we have seen develop, it is possible they could earn at least one more unless they have a total and utter breakdown.

Oswald & Danny are keeping up the good racing, even taking the time to stop to buy a little food at a roadside stand. I’m sure that the little lead they had developed ahead of the other teams factored into their decision to stop. Had this been a closer leg, there is no way they would have stopped.

I guess I’m looking pretty foolish at the moment, what with my prediction last week that Teri & Ian would take the million dollar prize. But then, I wasn’t expecting it to be so difficult for them to get tickets to their next destination. Clearly I need to give up on my prognostication hobby and stick to my day job. This is why I don’t play the lottery either.
