Elimination Report: Joe & Bill

07 Apr

This week’s episode saw a sad farewell to an enjoyable team. Joe & Bill’s second race (almost) around the world came to an unfortunate end in Poland this week where a combination of bad race design, a few bad choices, and a dose of bad luck all conspired to bump them out of the race. But they gave us an enjoyable 7 episodes worth of racing, and for that we can be thankful.

In many ways, their elimination was almost a forgone conclusion from the beginning of their final episode. They were about 16 hours behind the lead times, meaning they had no chance to secure better tickets to Warsaw. With their last place arrival in Warsaw along with Eric & Danielle, they would have had to run a perfect leg in order to have avoided the “marked for elimination” tag at the end of the first of the two legs. But they didn’t seem to be able to hold it together well enough to beat them to the mat. Had they done so, it would have been Eric & Danielle out this week, with the Guidos surviving to race another day.Joe & Bill seemed to be holding their own up until the last few episodes. Then, things started to unravel for them. The ultimate example of this was the scene at the airport with Joe standing on the tarmac yelling at the departing plane to come back and get them. Being in last place with the threat of elimination hanging over your head would be very stressful, and sometimes people don’t handle that stress as well as they should. One nice change from Season 1 of The Amazing Race is that the Guidos managed to avoid having themselves cast as the “bad guys”. I imagine that they were much more aware of such things this time around and made a concerted effort to avoid anything the might make them look like bad guys. But with Charla & Mirna around, who needs the Guidos as bad guys.

But now, they get to go home and see Guido. Hopefully they haven’t been feeding him any tainted dog food. Goodbye, gentlemen! We’ll miss you.
