Episode 11.9 - Hong Kong Phooey
Watching The Amazing Race with a pair of hair clippers buzzing in your ear is kind of tough. Catching bits and pieces of the episode and trying to form a coherent vision of what’s going on is tougher. Doing both at the same time is almost impossible.
My experience watching this episode was very atypical. I was at my parents house getting a haircut when this episode came on, so I caught a little bit of the dialogue around the airport intrigue, before the load buzzing in my ear drowned everything out. (I’m blind without my glasses, so I didn’t see any of it.) Once the haircut was done, I watched the end of the episode in between chasing the kids down. Needless to say, this made for a very skewed reaction to the episode. I did sit down and re-watch it at home later that night, but it didn’t seem to make a whole lot more sense the second time either. But, I’ll try to form some coherent thoughts around this episode. The airport drama wasn’t nearly as interesting this time around. About the only thing of note is the Beauty Queens’ refusal to fold in front of Mirna’s “in your face” attitude. Good for them. Too bad it they didn’t end up on the last flight out (hmm, sounds like a song).
The visit to Hong Kong was interesting, but the tasks seem to be too tied to the cities movie and television persona. More uniqueness, less flash!!
And that’s about all I can come up with for this episode. Not as exciting or riveting as others. Next week, I hope to watch the whole thing in one sitting so that the narrative flow isn’t interrupted.

[...] Wow! This is the kind of great leg that makes it worth dealing with episodes like last week. Intrigue, mistakes, bad navigation, and unexpected finishes. What more could a viewer ask for? Of course, it once again shot a gaping hole in my predictions. [...]
