Season 12, Leg 1: (Bad) Luck of the Irish
The Amazing Race has started again. All the old favorites are back. Frantic races to the airport to get the first flight. Disappointment in finding out that you missed the first flight. Joy on discovering that the first flight was delayed and arrived after you. Navigation difficulties. Ferry rides to nowhere. Equipment malfunctions. Opportunities to face you fears. Stubborn pack animals. Frantic race to the finish line. The only thing missing from this first leg is the language barrier that dogs the racers as they get out of Western Europe.
The best moment of the entire leg came watching Ari and Staella struggle with their donkey while being passed by almost every other team on the race. I kept waiting for Ari to scream that his donkey was broken. That would have been a truly excellent shout out.
I don’t have much feel for the teams yet. Other than Ari & Staella, who are now gone, I haven’t developed a dislike for any of the teams yet. I’m sure they’ll start doing annoying things soon enough. But in the meantime, I’m going to revel in the joy of not hating anyone.
Surprise of the Leg: Watching Kynt & Vyxsin arrive at the pit stop first. They really hauled butt to make it there ahead of everyone, and they didn’t make any mistakes on this leg. But I kept wondering how long their makeup is going to hold out with the rigors of this race.
Next week: Teams taking a flying leap over (or into) the mud.
